I never knew you had to buy rugs

Hey there,

The new studio is taking shape.

It’s also taking my money.

I have all the gear I need to make the studio work, and yet I’m still hemorrhaging money.

Here are 12 costs, both expected and unexpected, that kicked me in the shins during the move.

1. Rent - The big one, and the reason I’ve worked from home for the past 2 decades. The reason why most of us work from home. It's significant.
2. Movers - I hired my friend Angel and his 500 ft long trailer. He’s a magician at picking up heavy stuff. I used up all my moving favors a decade ago, and pianos are stupid heavy, so only the pros from here on out.
3. Photo prints and frames - not a necessity, but I want the studio to be full of art and books and such. We have more than just ears. Frames, like everything else, are expensive, even with a half off coupon from Hobby Lobby.
4. Cleaning supplies - I’m not big-time enough to own an extra mop.
5. Furniture - My home studio had 1 chair. I scored a nice sofa on Facebook Marketplace. I bought a pair of mid-century-modern chairs for the control room. They arrived in a cardboard box with an Allen wrench. Cost me 8 hours to put them together.
6. Rugs - I never knew you had to buy rugs. Rugs have always just been there. Under my feet.
7. Fabric - I know way too much about fabric. Every 8 to 10 years I hit up Cutting Corners in North Dallas for my absorption panel fabric needs. Gone are the days of paying $7.99/yard. Way gone. Like multiply by 3 gone.
8. Food and coffee - I’m a 90 second walk to a dozen restaurants and a half dozen coffee shops. I’m gonna need to enroll in another semester of Dave Ramsey. IYKYK.
9. Insurance - I love paying money for insurance. It’s so great. The best!
10. Lamps - Overhead lighting is unacceptable. If that makes me a vibe snob then so be it.
11. Internet - I pay for internet at home, and now I pay for internet at the studio. But this is internet for a Business, which is Spectrum’s way of saying it’s the same thing but more expensive.
12. Gas - I’m a gas guzzling, truck driving, red blooded American (who never ever hauls anything anywhere).

Despite the costs, I’m absolutely loving this new space. Worth it? I want to say yes, but time will tell.
